Years ago, Laurie Ann Murabito felt that she had the fairy tale life: she had met the man of her dreams, got married, everything was perfect. One day everything changed – her husband got sick. He started having less energy, and noticing he wasn’t able to work out as hard at the gym. Finally he went to the Doctor. Laurie Ann’s husband was diagnosed with Spinal Meningioma. By 2003, his condition worsened to where he could barely walk and was in need of a surgery every 3 months just to keep the pain at bay. Laurie Ann knew she had to do something. She started doing research and asking questions until she finally asked the right one: What would you do if this was your brother? Ultimately, Laurie Ann’s husband’s doctor was able to give him more quality time, but it was too late to completely remove the tumors.
Today Laurie Ann is working to bring change to the healthcare environment. She knows that to make a change in the mindset of the healthcare workers, it has to come from the top. Laurie Ann’s mission is to develop better leaders, to organically change the culture of healthcare, and change the patient experience.

The Onwards Medical Breakthrough
Today’s Medical Breakthrough comes from the University of Pennsylvania, where where a possible true cure for cancer is being developed. Backed by Novartis, the third-biggest drug company, this study has been conducted on 22 children and 5 adults diagnosed with Emily’s disease, an acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These patients had all had multiple bone marrow transplants and had tried up to 10 different types of chemotherapy. Currently all 27 are in a complete remission with no sign of the cancer. Novartis is planning to file with the FDA in 2016 and this amazing treatment may become available within the next few years.
